Alex Trebek, long time host of the game show Jeopardy, has finally come forward to admit he is in fact an Umphreak. Speculation began to rise after Umphrey’s McGee was refrenced on a the game show episode which aired on February 23rd, 2015. The category that featured this Midwest improvisational band was “Foreign Song Titles” and involved the song “No Diablo” off Umphrey’s most recent release, Similar Skin.
In an exclusive tell all interview with The Utopian Blur, Trebek shared that he has been seeing Umphrey’s live on the West Coast for quite some time. His favor
ite song is
“Pay the Snucka” due to it’s catchy repetition and gambling references. He said, “I often change the words around in my head using names of contestants. It’s quite fun and they have no idea.”
Like most Umphreaks, Alex Trebek has taken his obsession to the extreme. He first suggested changing the Final Jeopardy song to the first few notes of “Gulf Stream” but the network refused the request. They finally allowed Umphrey’s to be featured after an article was published about the band by Rolling Stone Magazine proving they were now an act that gets mainstream recognition.
Rumors have circulated that Trebek will be inviting the members of Umphrey’s to participate in Celebrity Jeopardy while they are in California for their West Coast tour. “I can not confirm anything at this time,” Trebek shared. “All I will say is expect to see much more Umphlove on Jeopardy in the future.”
